Foot Health Awareness Month
Do you have
one of those jobs that keep you working
on your feet all day or even for your
whole shift – 12 hours at times! Well,
we have just the right fact sheet for
you called, you guessed it, Working on
your Feet. This little guy covers a lot
of information about your feet and how
working on your feet can affect you.
Beyond simple fatigue and discomfort,
did you know that more serious health
effects can result from working on your
feet. Some of these can be: low back
pain, painful feet, heel spurs,
orthopedic changes in the feet (e.g.
flat feet), restricted blood flow (from
standing only), swelling in the feet and
legs, varicose veins, increased chance
of arthritis in the knees and hips, and
plantar fasciitis. You know what? We
even have a fact sheet on plantar
fasciitis – how convenient is that! So
if you are interested on how your feet
can be affected by working on them all
day, click here for our
Working on your Feet and
Plantar Fasciitis fact sheets.
Speech and Hearing Awareness Month
How many
times have you heard your loved one yell
to you “turn that TV down” or repeat
what someone has said to you? Have you
thought that this type of hearing loss
can be from your workplace? Does your
workplace have loud, vibrating tools or
machines? Take a minute and think about
it. There are many factors such as
noise, vibration and solvents present in
a workplace that contribute to hearing
loss. Often when two or more of the
factors are present within a workplace
the result is even greater than the
simple additive result expected. Take
some time from your busy schedule and
read our fact sheet on Occupational
Hearing Loss. Just
click here and it will inform you on
some things that you may have not even
thought about.

We are here to tell you that May 6 to
May 12 is
North American Occupational Safety and
Health Week. This week is here to
help employers, employees and the
general public of the importance of
preventing injury and illness in the
workplace, at home and in the community.
The mission of the Occupational Health
Clinics for Ontario Workers Inc. (OHCOW)
is to prevent occupational illnesses and
injury, and to promote the highest
degree of physical, mental and social
well-being of all workers. We strive to
accomplish this through the
identification of workplace factors
which are detrimental to the health and
well-being of all workers, through the
distribution of excellent occupational
health, hygiene, and ergonomic
information to increase knowledge among
workers, employers and the general
public; and through the provision of
services designed to produce changes to
improve workplaces and the health of
workers. So let’s not just recognize
Health and Safety Week, how about we
live it day to day, 365 days per year?
We think it’s something we all can do!
Don’t forget that May 28 to June 1 is
SPINEWEEK. For those of you out
there, who know how debilitating a sore
back or a back injury can be. We of
course have two fact sheets to help you
protect your back while you are working
and also how your back gets injured.
These two fact sheets will help you know
how to lift properly, push and pull,
teach you on how that back of yours
works and give you that much needed
information to avoid back injuries. You
can’t replace a back, so read on and
help protect it!!

Asthma Day
A lot of the time,
that asthma that you have been suffering
from can be caused or aggravated by your
workplace. Occupational asthma, or work
related asthma, is asthma that happens
for the first time because of exposure
to some type of agent at the work place.
The auto parts, foam and plastic
manufacturing industries have the
highest rates of work related asthma. It
is important to identify this type of
asthma to help control the symptoms and
prevent it from happening again, or to
someone else. It is important to note
that people who have asthma before may
also have symptoms that get worse
because of something at work. Click here

Occupational Asthma and
Agricultural Asthma.

OHCOW Offers
New Vibration Service to the North
Vibration
has been shown to increase the risk of
developing several MSDs. Therefore
reducing the exposure to vibration has
become a top priority in many
industries. OHCOW now has the equipment
necessary to complete a vibration
assessment (either hand arm or whole
body) to ensure that workers are not at
risk when utilizing vibration equipment.
Once measurements are taken and the
workers are interviewed, OHCOW can make
recommendations to reduce the exposure
to vibration to below the threshold
limit values for daily use.
Impact
drivers, jackleg/stopper drills, heavy
equipment, passenger vehicles are all
examples of tools that can expose a
worker to vibration and can have
detrimental effects if exposed for
prolonged periods of time. OHCOW’s goal
is to reduce these exposures before
injuries occur.
To make an
appointment for an onsite visit or to
have any questions answered regarding
the service please contact
OHCOW.
